@adammarkey: But there's no sense crying over every mistake. You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.

Office 2010 promises action, adventure, and death of clippy

Awesome video, but I think Microsoft spent more money on the production of this than most startups pay their engineers.

Lackluster JavaFX support for real applications - no textareas?

I had to navigate to the link above just to get a simple textarea to work in JavaFX like the ones you use to edit large amounts of data in web applications.

If Java FX can't even supply a native component for a TextArea in a PRODUCTION release, how can they support people trying to actually build real applications beyond "flying pixels" on the screen.

I am shocked and appalled by this. Larry now that you're doing the thinking for sun, either make JavaFx a real application platform or throw it in the trash.

Don't even get me started on JavaFX Script - that is a rant for another day.

The 5 Inch Difference

Do 5 inches really matter? There are many places where 5 inches makes a world of difference...

I wonder if United knows exactly what people immediately think with this ad campaign?

Clever marketing :P

Thanks Colleen for sending it.

2009 WRX - A car hacker's dream

Why you should buy the 2009 WRX:
You've got the need for speed but also the need for a car you can live with, the need for a car you can afford to fill up, the need to explore new routes, the need to move more than one person around simultaneously, the need to store things and the need to not spend all your money on a car payment.

Why you shouldn't buy this car:
You've got the need for speed but also the need to drive a car that looks like it was built for an adult, the need for smooth roads, the need for big engines, the need for loud noises and the need for something impractical.

Suitability Parameters:
Speed Merchants: Yes
Fashion Victims: No
Treehuggers: Yes
Mack Daddies: No
Tuner Crowd: Yes
Hairdressers: No
Penny Pinchers: Yes
Euro Trash: No
Working Stiffs: No
Technogeeks: Yes
Poseurs: No
Soccer Moms: No
Nascar Dads: No
Golfing Grandparents: No

Out of the box the 2009 WRX is a beast. What the article doesn't mention is that the vf52 turbo that sits under the hood can be re-tuned to give the STi a run for it's money.

With a small mod of a COBB accessport (http://www.cobbtuning.com) you can hack your car to be even faster, more fuel efficient, and even more fun to drive. In computer geek terms, this car is the pentium4 2.4ghz processor that could be overclocked to near 4 ghz on only air cooling. I'm all about performance for free - and the WRX delivers.

If you're in the market for a new car - this is definitely one to consider.

Catching Squid in Cape Cod

We just caught 4 squid on the cape this weekend. Made for some tasty calamari and paella!

Edit: actually we caught 5 - turns out squid are cannibals... (eew)

Apparently the squid only come into the harbor in Hyannis for a couple weeks out of the year when the water temperature is between 50-52 degrees. They are pretty easy to catch, all you need is a regular fishing pole and special squid lures (with extra hooks so they can't get away).

"Cleaning" a squid is definitely an interesting experience - watch out for that leftover ink :)
